Bonus is always a good thing. Bonus is the ice cream after the meal, the features that come on an extended DVD.
Or to put it in your terms, it's getting the rental upgrade for free because you are a valued customer.
But technically, a bonus is unnecessary when it really comes down to it.
So I see your confusion...
But think of it this way, a child's focus is always on the bonus and never on the necessary. So, I'd say this is more of a positive than a negative... In twenty years, it might be a different answer.
